Case Study: Sausage Cloud achieves high-density, low-power edge storage with Ceph and SoftIron HyperDrive

A Ceph Case Study

Preview of the Sausage Cloud Case Study

HyperDrive delivers high density, low power and high-performing storage at the edge.

Sausage Cloud, a non-profit public IaaS cloud platform supporting the open-source community, faced significant challenges due to its remote data center location in a small, power-constrained war bunker. With a limited budget, their small team needed a highly efficient, high-performing storage solution to help them deliver competitive services. SoftIron donated its HyperDrive storage appliance, which is purpose-built to optimize the open-source Ceph storage software.

SoftIron's HyperDrive solution provided Sausage Cloud with massive storage density increases of 2x to 10x while being 5x more energy efficient, reducing power consumption by 80%. This high-density, low-power appliance allowed the customer to fit more storage into their limited rack space without upgrading power circuits. The solution from SoftIron also included remote management capabilities and full interoperability with their existing Ceph environment, delivering all the benefits of a proprietary solution without vendor lock-in.
