TUDelft - Customer Case Study

TU Delft, a large and sustainability-focused university campus, needed to replace two worn-out gas engines in its central energy plant while ensuring the new system would integrate with its existing district heating network, meet delivery requirements, and deliver a strong return on investment. The university chose Centrica Business Solutions for a customized combined heat and power (CHP) solution, specifically new MTU engines for electricity and heat generation.

Centrica Business Solutions supplied and installed the CHP unit, including a DeNOx exhaust gas after-treatment system to help meet CO2 emission targets. Based on TU Delft’s calculations, the project was expected to achieve a ROI in four years, with even the worst-case scenario at 13.2 years. The contract was worth about €2 million upfront, plus roughly €2 million more for 10 years of maintenance, and TU Delft expected the engines to operate reliably for many years.
