The power to reduce CO2 emissions

University Hospitals of the North Midlands NHS Trust wanted a cost-effective, sustainable way to produce energy as part of its ambition to become the most sustainable NHS trust in the country. Working with Centrica Business Solutions, the trust looked to reduce electricity consumption, lower energy costs, and cut carbon emissions across its hospitals, using a combined heat and power (CHP) solution.

Centrica Business Solutions installed a CHP unit alongside a Premier Plus Maintenance Programme to generate electricity and heat more efficiently on site. The system is saving the trust around £500,000 a year, equivalent to funding 20 full-time nurses, while cutting carbon emissions by 2,000 tonnes, or the equivalent of removing 1,000 cars from the road. The maintenance programme also helps ensure the unit runs reliably for at least 92% of the year, supporting continued savings and reinvestment in patient care.
