Sappi doubles Demand Side Response payments

Sappi, a global paper manufacturer, wanted to lower electricity costs by better using the flexibility of its energy-intensive Lanaken mill. Although the plant already participated in reserve markets, returns were too low, and Sappi needed a way to access stricter, faster Demand Side Response (DSR) programmes without disrupting production. Centrica Business Solutions was brought in to help.

Centrica Business Solutions performed a flexibility audit and used its patented ultra-fast portfolio technology to integrate Sappi’s flexible pulp plant into a Primary Reserve programme with a 30-second response requirement. By monitoring buffer levels and protecting downstream production, Centrica Business Solutions enabled fast curtailment with no impact on output, and Sappi doubled its annual DSR payments.
