Gateshead Council powers 3,000 homes for 60 minutes with Centrica Business Solutions

Gateshead Council sought to supplement its existing Gateshead District Energy Centre, which uses combined heat and power (CHP) units, with a solution that would provide more flexibility in managing its energy. The council partnered with Centrica Business Solutions to implement a battery storage system to achieve this goal.

Centrica Business Solutions installed a 3MW battery storage system, one of the UK's largest commercial schemes, comprised of six units. Managed by Centrica under a 10-year contract, the solution stores enough energy to power 3,000 homes for one hour. This provides flexibility to support the national grid and will help meet local energy demand peaks, generating income for the council while future-proofing its energy system.
