Centrica builds 49MW battery storage at Roosecote with Centrica Business Solutions

Centrica faced the challenge of repurposing its decommissioned Roosecote power station, a former coal and gas-fired plant, into a modern energy asset that could support the UK's grid stability and transition to renewable energy. Centrica Business Solutions was engaged to transform this brownfield site.

Centrica Business Solutions built one of Europe's largest battery storage facilities on the site. The 49MW facility uses over 100,000 lithium-ion battery cells to store energy, which can power approximately 50,000 homes for half an hour. This solution, operated as part of a Virtual Power Plant, provides the National Grid with an extremely fast response to fluctuations in supply and demand, helping to balance the grid and enable a greater use of renewables. Centrica Business Solutions successfully delivered a flexible asset that exemplifies the UK's shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy.
