ArcelorMittal joins capacity market

ArcelorMittal, the global steel and mining manufacturer, needed a way to take part in the capacity market and reduce energy costs without disrupting steel production or quality. With help from Centrica Business Solutions, using its Demand Side Response (DSR) service, the company explored whether its plants could temporarily curtail power fast enough to meet transmission system operator requirements.

Centrica Business Solutions solved this by aggregating ArcelorMittal’s plants into a broader DSR portfolio, allowing other industrial sites to substitute when ArcelorMittal could not reduce load. This enabled ArcelorMittal to keep full control of its industrial processes while still generating revenue from up to 150 MW returned to the transmission grid during peak periods.
