National Training Network boosts math accessibility in months with Centric Consulting

Centric Consulting partnered with National Training Network, Inc. (NTN), a math professional development company, to address challenges with its third-party math assessment software. NTN needed a custom solution to gain more control and, specifically, to add a read-aloud feature for students with visual impairments or language barriers, requiring accurate, teacher-like pronunciation in both English and Spanish under a tight deadline.

The solution from Centric Consulting integrated Wiris MathType, OpenAI, and Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services. The team fine-tuned OpenAI's API with extensive training data to translate math expressions into proper spoken language, then used Azure for text-to-speech conversion. This allowed NTN's MathKEYmatics platform to read questions aloud accessibly, achieving high translation accuracy and supporting thousands of questions with verbiage in two languages.
