University of Virginia Library Overcomes Fragmentation with Unified Digital Asset Management

The University of Virginia Library, which supports more than 40,000 users and manages a massive collection—including millions of items and 250TB of digital assets—faced fragmented repositories, inefficient workflows, access issues, and no single cohesive system to manage digitized and born-digital content. These challenges prevented staff and patrons from fully leveraging the Library’s digital holdings.

censhare implemented a single DAM that standardized workflows, metadata and rights management, and integrated with systems like ILS, ArchivesSpace, Archivematica and CollectionSpace. The graph database and direct web publishing streamlined access, empowered users to self-serve most digitized content, simplified restricted requests, and delivered scalable, secure hosting on the Library’s AWS cloud—resulting in faster discovery, easier management, and higher utilization of digital assets.
