Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield Meets FHIR Interoperability Standards with CData ArcESB

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, the state’s largest health insurer with 3.2 million members, needed to quickly adapt its data ingestion framework to meet new healthcare interoperability mandates. Its existing Apache Spark-based pipeline handled JSON and CSV, but it had to start receiving complex EDI 837 files and transform them into FHIR-compliant outputs. Horizon turned to CData and its ArcESB product to close the technical gap and support the new requirements.

With CData ArcESB, Horizon worked with the vendor to map EDI documents, validate incoming data, and automate translation of partner EDI 837 files into EOB documents that could be sent in FHIR format. The solution was implemented in under six weeks and added automated error logging, communications, and data-quality controls. CData’s ArcESB also gave Horizon a path to future integration with its data lake for monitoring and reporting on ingestion and transformation quality.
