How to Fight Rare Diseases Through Crowdfunding

Rare Genomics Institute (RGI) helps patients with ultra-rare diseases by creating custom research studies, connecting families with top scientists, and funding genome sequencing when no organizations or research support exist. Their challenge was enabling families to raise money quickly and seamlessly for sequencing and studies without building and maintaining a fundraising platform or sending donors to an external site.

RGI adopted CauseVox to host patient-centered crowdfunding pages that matched their site, supported press, social and offline drives, and saved hundreds of staff hours. The campaign produced 4 fundraising pages (all raised >$1,000), an average of ~$6,000 per page, a top page of $7,700, ~300 online donations averaging $50, and 200 Facebook likes—reinforcing lessons to reduce friction, encourage sharing, provide ongoing content, and enable small gifts.
