Crowdsourcing Collection Data Using the Open-Source CatalogBot to Enable Public Participation and Enrich and Preserve Data

The Australian Computer Museum Society (ACMS), a volunteer-driven organization, faced the challenge of cataloging its extensive collection of over 60,000 computing artifacts. Using spreadsheets and photos was no longer scalable, so they sought a formal digital solution. The organization selected CatalogIt for its cloud-based collection management system (CMS) and its useful mobile app to begin documenting their full inventory.

With CatalogIt implemented, the ACMS not only streamlined its cataloging process for improved data accuracy but also created an innovative, open-source tool called CatalogBot. This integration, developed by CatalogIt customer ACMS, allows the public to discuss artifacts and share stories, enriching the collection data. The initiative has already generated discussions on dozens of items, fostering public engagement and helping to preserve valuable historical narratives for future generations.
