AvMed Relies on Catalogic® for Streamlined Block-Level Backups of Hundreds of Servers

AvMed Health Plans, a Florida healthcare insurer serving over 300,000 members, faced growing data protection challenges as its two main data centers and statewide offices accumulated more servers and data. The company’s legacy tape-based backup process was slow, labor-intensive (three full-time admins), and unable to meet backup windows or recovery needs for a mixed environment of legacy and modern systems.

AvMed deployed a unified backup infrastructure using Catalogic DPX with NetApp disk storage, enabling block-level incremental backups, bare-metal restores, and site-to-site replication. The result: nightly backup jobs dropped to 10–60 minutes, administrative effort fell from three FTEs to roughly 30 minutes by a single admin, protection scaled from ~120 to ~230 servers, restores became fast and granular, and remote replication eliminated tape shipments while strengthening disaster recovery.
