Leiden University Medical Center - Customer Case Study

Leiden University Medical Center ran BLISS3, a double‑blind randomized controlled trial led by Albert Dahan, to study depth of neuromuscular block in morbidly obese patients undergoing laparoscopic bariatric surgery. The team faced the challenge of capturing high‑frequency, perioperative data (hemodynamics, neuromuscular monitoring and other signals) directly from multiple patient monitors in the operating room, handling repeated measures across cases, and completing the trial and analysis on an accelerated timeline.

To meet this need the team used Castor EDC to enable live, simultaneous capture of device data in the OR and structured data entry in the ward, leveraging Castor EDC’s built‑in checks, validation prompts and repeated‑measures study setup while preparing scripts and analysis syntax in advance. The result: the RCT was completed in 8 months with over 58,000 intraoperative data points captured across typical days with 4–6 cases, enabling rapid data preparation and timely publication.
