Hasselt University, through Dr. Rob Bielen at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg, launched the PrevER-trial to update Belgium’s long-overdue hepatitis C seroprevalence data by recruiting 3,000 emergency-department attendees in a 4-month window. The study needed a secure, protocol-compliant way to collect questionnaires and lab results at scale rather than using paper, Excel or Access, so the team adopted the Castor EDC electronic data capture platform and eCRFs for real-time, compliant data collection.

Castor EDC delivered a straightforward, affordable EDC solution with a simple layout, built-in calculators and SPSS export functionality, allowing two researchers to surpass 400 inclusions in under a month and rapidly progress toward the 3,000-participant goal. Using Castor EDC improved data protection and protocol adherence, cut the time required to prepare datasets for analysis, and enabled the study to quickly generate the evidence needed to identify high-risk groups and offer diagnostic follow-up and treatment to infected patients.
