Indiana University earns top marks for decreasing healthcare spending

Indiana University, a large public university with about 18,000 employees and 43,000 lives covered, was facing rising healthcare costs and needed to drive enrollment in high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) while helping employees use HSA funds more effectively. Many employees lacked price transparency and didn’t know how much services cost, causing rapid depletion of HSA balances and limiting the university’s ability to contain benefits spending.

IU implemented Castlight’s health navigation platform, ran targeted enrollment campaigns and incentives, and taught employees to compare prices, track deductibles and manage HSAs. The result: HDHP enrollment climbed to 84% (≈14,000 employees), Castlight registrations exceeded 5,000 with strong engagement (about 12 pages per visit and >50% return rate), and IU realized a 5% year-over-year decrease in its 2014 healthcare cost trend.
