Citizens Donates Over a Million Meals to Feeding America While Mobilizing Their Organization to Better Health

Citizens Bank, a Providence-based financial institution with 20,000+ colleagues and more than 1,200 branches, wanted to increase colleague wellbeing and engagement while expanding its community impact—specifically to fight hunger through Feeding America. The challenge was to create an inclusive, organization-wide program that encouraged physical activity, connected colleagues across the country, and translated their collective effort into measurable philanthropic impact.

To meet that goal Citizens launched the Step Up to Fight Hunger Challenge in 2020, partnering with Feeding America and using Castlight Challenges to gamify steps into meal-equivalents, align the effort with Credo Week and Hunger Action Month, and drive participation through visible leadership support. Over three years participants logged 2.1 billion steps—equating to about 1.1 million meals donated—with growing registration (4,252 colleagues in 2022), stronger social connections, and sustained commitment to colleague wellbeing and community giving.
