Fifth Third Bank, a Cincinnati-based financial services firm with 18,500 employees and over 1,100 branches, needed to offer highly competitive yet affordable health benefits to attract and retain talent. With only 18% of employees enrolled in the consumer-directed health plan (CDHP) and a major benefits redesign (single carrier + HSA contributions) underway, the bank faced the challenge of educating employees and shifting them toward more cost‑effective care choices.

Fifth Third selected Castlight (an Anthem partner) to give employees a simple, personalized, integrated view of medical, pharmacy and HSA benefits and to provide real‑time insights for targeted communications. After a multi-channel launch, household registration reached 35% (exceeding a 29% goal), 65% of users returned within a year, CDHP participation rose from 18% to 46%, 42% of employees said Castlight influenced a healthcare decision, and 84% rated the tool favorably—along with increased preventive care use and better benefits visibility for the HR team.
