Preview of the Leonardo Case Study

Software Risk management at Leonardo

Leonardo’s Land & Naval Defense Electronics Division — a major supplier of military command-and-communication systems — faced fragmented software practices after inheriting applications from multiple vendors: differing development processes, KPIs, metrics and analysis tools created inconsistent quality, limited visibility and heightened application risk. The division needed a standardized, measurable approach to manage software quality, reduce defects early, and improve decision‑making across its portfolio.

Leonardo standardized engineering methods and training, adopted the IBM Rational platform, ran a proof of concept and selected CAST’s Application Intelligence Platform for automated structural and quality analysis, dashboards and Automated Function Points. Integrated into the toolchain in 2017, the solution enabled monthly portfolio analysis, actionable KPIs and reports, earlier defect detection, greater reuse and improved governance — boosting team efficiency and cutting development costs while surfacing thousands of violations across ~40 applications (17.2M LOC / 59,622 AFP) to drive remediation.
