The Clarion-Ledger Spices Up Flat Data with Visual Charts

The Clarion‑Ledger, a long‑running newspaper in Jackson, Mississippi, wanted a better way to show recent above‑average temperatures alongside historic records. Assistant Managing Editor Earnest Hart found flat side‑by‑side tables confusing for readers and needed an interactive, easy‑to‑read visualization that would work across desktop and mobile devices.

Using Caspio’s point‑and‑click chart wizard, Hart imported source data from Excel and created a trend‑line chart in about an hour. The interactive chart includes images and hover tooltips for exact values, requires no Flash (so it’s mobile‑friendly), and gives readers a clear visual comparison—prompting the paper to plan additional charted projects for elections, crime, unemployment, and traffic data.
