A CARTO Case Study
Vizonomy is a software company that evaluates climate and disaster risk by combining open data and spatial analytics to help governments, insurers, and development agencies (including clients like the Inter‑American Development Bank and USAID) plan and respond to hazards. The core challenge was that traditional risk assessments are expensive, static, and accessible only to well‑funded stakeholders, leaving many local governments and communities without timely, affordable tools to develop hazard mitigation plans or long‑term asset protection strategies.
Using CARTO, open data, and open‑source tools, Vizonomy built a cloud GIS Climate Risk Platform that syncs real‑time government datasets (FEMA floodplains, NOAA sea‑level scenarios, and 70+ layers) to deliver customizable, shareable analyses and visualizations. The platform cuts assessment costs by roughly 80%, saves hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars by eliminating the need for costly consultants, and gives local officials and asset managers fast, up‑to‑date decision support while preserving enterprise data privacy.
