Case Study: Wecity achieves bike-safety mapping across 18 Italian cities with CARTO

Using Location Intelligence to drive sustainable mobility strategies in smarter cities

Wecity is an Italian sustainable mobility app (founded 2014) that gamifies greener travel by rewarding users who bike, carpool or use public transport. To improve biker safety and become a “TripAdvisor of mobility,” Wecity needed to crowdsource and visualize smartphone routing data from thousands of users across multiple cities and embed beautiful, easy-to-use maps in their web and mobile apps.

Using CARTO Builder and CARTO CSS, Wecity visualized data from 12,000 monthly active users across 18 Italian cities, mapped over 5,800 km (city coverage 1.8–38.1%) and created the Urban Cyclability Index and % City Coverage metrics. The torque animation and widget-driven interface made temporal journeys and analysis simple for product teams, enabling a collaborative platform that delivers street-safety ratings and actionable insights to both citizens and local governments while speeding prototyping and lowering development costs.
