The Data Portal of Medellín Infrastructure for an Innovative City

Medellín, Colombia’s rapidly evolving “future city,” partnered with IT firm Servinformación to increase transparency and citizen participation by connecting city departments (transportation, health, education, utilities, construction) and aggregating large civic datasets. The challenge was to build an accessible, scalable platform that served a broad demographic, prioritized neighborhoods with the greatest social and economic needs, and enabled cross‑agency collaboration and open information sharing.

Using CARTO, Servinformación created the Sigamos Medellín/Mapas Medellín portal — an interactive data site with real‑time transport tracking, social media feeds, traffic, weather and satellite layers, Google Maps integration, and APIs to handle millions of data points. The portal improved transparency and accountability by giving citizens and officials easy access to infrastructure budgets, project stages and timelines, fostered government–citizen collaboration, and delivered a replicable smart‑city model for public–private innovation.
