Real-Time Data Insights For Red Electrica De Espana

Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the national transmission operator charged with guaranteeing Spain’s safe and continuous electricity supply, needed to publish real-time public information for more than 2,000 indicators—many updating every ten minutes. The challenge was to organize, analyze and display large, frequently changing spatial datasets in a way that integrated with REE’s native databases, complied with legal transparency requirements, and remained easily understandable to non-technical audiences and stakeholders across the country.

REE and Vizzuality implemented CARTO to visualize geospatial indicators, using foreign data wrappers to stream data from REE’s Oracle systems in real time. The result is a dynamic, fully customizable open-data platform and public API with intuitive maps and temporal visualizations that meet security and performance needs, improve data access for engineers and the general public, and provide clear insights into regional generation, distribution and economic impacts across Spain.
