Fon: Visualizing Millions of Data Point for Better Client Access

Fon, a global WiFi provider with more than 19 million crowdsourced hotspots, needed a public, partner-friendly portal to expose worldwide access point coverage and its partner networks. The challenge was to visualize millions of points at multiple zoom levels while preserving performance, displaying partner branding and details, and enabling partners to host their own maps without exposing sensitive customer data.

Using CARTO, Fon built a scalable, data-driven mapping tool and hotspot repository that georepresents individual access points, shows density at higher zooms, and customizes points with partner branding. CARTO’s real-time sync and flexible APIs integrated with Fon’s systems to automate workflows and keep partner data synchronized without sharing sensitive information, producing attractive, high-performance maps used by partners and end users and unlocking new use cases across venues and services.
