CUSTOMER STORIES Visualizing Linguistic Big Data for Deeper Insights

SIL International is a faith-based nonprofit that publishes the Ethnologue, an authoritative catalog of the world’s 7,117 living languages. To move beyond static, printed maps and provide precise, spatial language intelligence, Ethnologue needed a polygon-capable, interactive mapping solution that could show exactly where languages are spoken and support education, research and business users.

By adopting CARTO’s digital mapping platform, SIL turned detailed field data into shareable, interactive visualizations (including the popular “How Many Languages” page), driving new conversations and conversions. The maps have increased engagement and are being used for advocacy, academic research and business planning, while laying the groundwork for deeper, country-level analytical insights.
