Banco Sabadell, Spain’s fourth largest private banking group with more than 6.5 million customers and operations in 18 countries, needed to enable mobile transactions for cardholders without costly infrastructure upgrades or the overhead of delivering and managing NFC credentials on devices. To meet this challenge the bank engaged Carta Worldwide to deploy Host Card Emulation (HCE) with a Remote Secure Element (RSE) for NFC, developed in partnership with MasterCard.

Carta Worldwide implemented an HCE + RSE solution that combines secure cloud processing with on-device software to enable EMV-compatible NFC proximity payments on Android KitKat devices, including support for High Value Transactions with mobile PIN. The deployment eliminated the need to provision hardware secure elements, provided full lifecycle credential management, and allowed Banco Sabadell to rapidly connect and deploy mobile payments while minimizing integration time and costs.
