Vatican Museums preserves the Sistine Chapel with Carrier for 20,000 daily visitors

The Vatican Museums faced the challenge of preserving Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel from deterioration caused by the humidity and temperature fluctuations from approximately 20,000 daily visitors. They engaged Carrier Global to design a new, specialized HVAC solution to replace an outdated system and ensure optimal conservation conditions.

Carrier implemented an innovative climate control system using two AquaForce water-cooled chillers with Greenspeed intelligence. This intelligent system anticipates visitor levels and intuitively adjusts performance to maintain precise temperature and humidity while operating quietly and unobtrusively. The result is a technological masterpiece that allows for the conservation of the historic artwork for future generations while accommodating up to 2,000 visitors at a time. Carrier also provided a temporary system to ensure the chapel remained open throughout the installation.
