National Geographic Society preserves the Ice Maiden for 100,000 visitors with Carrier

The National Geographic Society required a specialized climate-controlled solution to safely transport and exhibit the ancient "Ice Maiden" mummy from Peru to its Washington, D.C. headquarters. Their challenge was to maintain extremely high humidity levels above 90% for preservation while simultaneously preventing frost and condensation from obscuring the view for visitors. They turned to Carrier Global for its expertise.

Carrier customized a packaged terminal air conditioner unit and engineered an insulated transport box cooled with dry ice for the journey. This solution from Carrier ensured the 3,700-mile transport and month-long exhibition were flawless, allowing over 100,000 visitors, including notable figures, to view the mummy. Carrier also assisted in building the mummy's permanent exhibit in Peru, ensuring its long-term preservation for future observation.
