Preview of the Kensington High School Case Study

Kensington High School achieves Pennsylvania’s first LEED Platinum high school with Carrier

Kensington High School, in an economically challenged Philadelphia neighborhood, needed to replace a deteriorating building with a new, sustainable facility. Their challenge was to create an inspirational learning environment with teacher-controlled classroom comfort and integrated building control, all while targeting LEED Gold certification. Vendor Carrier Global recommended a geothermal solution using Aquazone water source heat pumps.

Carrier's solution implemented 77 Aquazone heat pumps and custom energy recovery units, drawing geothermal energy from wells beneath the athletic field. This gave teachers control of their classroom temperature and fresh air, while the i-Vu Pro building automation system provided integrated monitoring of all HVAC and lighting. As a result, Kensington High School became the first high school in Pennsylvania to achieve LEED Platinum status, exceeding its initial sustainability goal.
