A Carl Zeiss Case Study
Handtmann, a family-owned German foundry and pioneer in megacasting, faced new quality assurance challenges due to the immense size and complexity of their single-shot aluminum structural components. These large, thin-walled castings were highly sensitive to process fluctuations and required volumetric inspection for internal defects, making traditional measurement methods inadequate. To meet these challenges, Handtmann partnered with Carl Zeiss for a comprehensive solution utilizing their ZEISS OMNIA GC 2D X-ray system, ZEISS ScanBox optical 3D scanner, and ZEISS PRISMO coordinate measuring machine.
The solution from Carl Zeiss provided Handtmann with a connected suite of tactile, optical, and X-ray technologies to inspect entire components for internal and surface defects, dimensional accuracy, and warping. This enabled fast, reproducible feedback loops and reliable verification of critical tolerances. The results included quicker OEM approvals due to measurement coordination with their customers, significant production time savings from the single-cast process, and a tangible competitive advantage through weight savings for electric vehicles, solidifying Handtmann's position as a Champions League quality supplier.
