A Carl Zeiss Meditec Division of Zeiss Case Study
The customer, ZEISS, partnered with the vendor, Carl Zeiss Meditec Division of Zeiss, on a pilot project to address the challenge of providing specialist ophthalmological care to patients in the remote Lofoten Islands of Norway. Residents previously had to travel for at least a full day to reach the nearest eye clinic, creating a significant barrier to essential health screenings.
Carl Zeiss Meditec Division of Zeiss implemented a connected care solution consisting of a camera with an ultra-wide-angle lens and corresponding software. This allowed an optical technician at a local optician's office to take high-resolution retinal images, which were then sent via encrypted cloud software to an ophthalmologist at a central clinic for remote examination. The results were highly successful, with a study proving that 97% of all eye examinations could be performed remotely. To date, the system has been used on more than 2,000 people across five locations in Norway, saving patients significant travel time and CO₂ emissions.
