Improving Patient Safety & Reducing Costs with Virtual Observation

UMass Memorial Health, a large health system in central Massachusetts, sought to expand its telehealth footprint beyond its successful tele-ICU program to find a cost-effective way to implement virtual patient observation for safety initiatives like fall prevention. Their goal was to support leaner staffing models while maintaining high-quality care. To address this challenge, they partnered with the vendor Caregility.

Caregility implemented its iObserver application on the Caregility Cloud platform, enabling remote staff to monitor multiple patients via mobile carts with two-way audio and video. This virtual observation solution proved as effective as one-to-one in-person sitting. The results for UMass Memorial included substantial labor cost savings, improved patient safety with over 12,000 interventions monthly, and no adverse events. Caregility provided a solution that earned overwhelming support from nursing leadership and became an indispensable, around-the-clock resource for the health system.
