Vail Unified School District Adopts Digital Health Platform To Provide Better Care To Its Students

Vail Unified School District, a 12,000‑student K–12 district in Vail, Arizona, struggled with a cumbersome paper‑based system of “encounter cards” to log medical episodes, medications, and care plans, which created clerical errors and pulled nurses away from student care. Facing more than 15 extensive state reports and over 36,000 logged episodes in 2015–16, the district adopted the CareDox digital health platform (CareDox Medical Center) to modernize its school health workflows.

CareDox delivered a cloud‑hosted, HIPAA/FERPA‑compliant Student Medical Record integrated with the district SIS, a parent portal, pre‑populated fields and dropdowns, and automated reporting. As a result, Vail health aides estimate more than a 50% reduction in episode logging and reporting time—saving up to 90 minutes per day per aide—and can compile annual reports in minutes, while improving accuracy and medication administration visibility thanks to CareDox.
