West Middlesex University Hospital increases filled shifts by 20% with Care Systems

West Middlesex University Hospital, an NHS trust providing advanced healthcare services, faced a significant challenge in deploying its nursing and midwifery staff to meet unpredictable patient needs safely and efficiently. Their traditional manual rostering and bank management systems were viewed as overly complex and incapable of adapting to rapid changes, risking patient safety and staff morale. The hospital partnered with vendor Care Systems to implement an electronic solution integrating rostering, patient acuity, and temporary staffing management.

Care Systems developed and implemented a tightly integrated triple system comprising the CareWare rostering software, the Acuity Workload Estimation System (AWES), and the CareBank temporary staffing management system. This solution automated roster creation, provided data-driven workload estimation, and managed an in-house nurse bank. The results were substantial, including £720,000 in nursing budget savings, a reduction in sickness levels to 3.03%, and a 20% increase in filled shifts. Care Systems' tools provided invaluable data for management and directly contributed to improved patient safety and staff morale.
