A Care Systems Case Study
West Middlesex University Hospital, an NHS Trust, needed a better way to deploy nursing and midwifery staff to match patient need, improve safety, and respond to unplanned activity. The hospital was also challenged by manual rostering, variable workload, and the need to manage temporary staffing more effectively. Care Systems provided its CareWare nurse rostering system, alongside patient acuity/dependency and bank management capabilities, to support these needs.
Care Systems implemented an integrated workforce solution combining rostering, acuity/workload estimation, and temporary staffing management, later enhanced with the event-driven CareWorks system and CareBank. The result was more accurate and timely staff deployment, better reporting for finance and HR, and improved control of sick leave and leave management. The hospital reported savings of £720,000 on nursing budgets in 2006/7, and the new bank process increased filled shifts by 20 percent, supporting staff morale and patient safety.
