A Carbonite Case Study
Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin (RWDI) is a Guelph-based global environmental and wind engineering firm whose projects (e.g., Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101) generate very large datasets—average project footprints exceed 25 TB and the main file server holds about 27 million files. With a seven-person IT team supporting 15,000+ applications, tight NDAs, two-month project timelines and 90% annual data growth, RWDI needed a cost-effective, scalable data protection strategy that could handle everyday deletions, ransomware risk and large-scale disasters.
RWDI partnered with CognoSystems and deployed Carbonite Server for encrypted, deduplicated and compressed backups plus offsite replication to a secondary data center 60 miles away. CognoSystems manages the secondary site; the setup protects 700 TB with one-year retention, enables five-minute restores, recovers 5–6 accidental deletions weekly, avoided a ransomware payout, reduced hardware/licensing costs, and ensures continuous business operations.
