Case Study: S4 Medical achieves shorter design cycles and faster time-to-market with Carbon

A Carbon Case Study

Preview of the S4 Medical Case Study

S4 Medical Shortens Medical Device Design Cycle to Improve Cardiac Care Procedures

S4 Medical (formerly Sotera Medical) is developing the Protect‑E device to protect the esophagus during catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, but needed to rapidly iterate and manufacture medical‑grade parts to secure early clinical trials. Working with Carbon (via Carbon Production Network partner Resolution Medical), S4 used the Carbon Platform and Carbon MPU 100 biocompatible material to address the challenge of long tooling cycles and the need for end‑use, biocompatible parts.

Carbon’s solution delivered production‑grade parts comparable to injection molding while using medical‑grade MPU 100, cutting traditional 6–8+ week tooling cycles down to days and allowing S4 to test new designs mid‑week. As a result, S4 accelerated design cycles, reduced time‑to‑market and costs, completed multiple pre‑clinical studies, and positioned the Protect‑E for planned clinical trials.
