Preview of the Puredyne Case Study

Improving Bioprinting with Biocompatible, 3D Printed Manufacturing Tools

Puredyne, ViscoTec’s new bioprinting printhead solution, faced tight medical, geometric, and production constraints—biocompatibility, chemical resistance, intricate internal channels, tight tolerances, small installation space, and low-volume/on-demand manufacturing. To meet these needs the team turned to Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis (Carbon DLS) process and Carbon MPU 100 material, produced with Carbon production partner rpm, to achieve the required accuracy and medical approvals.

Using Carbon DLS and MPU 100 (via rpm), Puredyne realized complex, unmoldable geometries with high surface quality and chemical resistance, shortened time to market from about 1 year to 4 months, and reduced part weight by 55% (275 g to 125 g) and height by 25% (22 cm to 16.5 cm). Carbon-enabled on-demand batches (~50 units) cut inventory costs while ensuring repeatable, production-grade parts, and helped the product win the Red Dot Design Award 2022 and secure media attention.
