HiTech Computers, a managed IT services provider in North Louisiana, faced a state of emergency after ransomware struck several Louisiana school districts on July 24, 2019 and a rural healthcare customer. Working with vendor Carbon Black and its managed endpoint protection (CB Defense / CB ThreatSight), HiTech went into high alert to hunt threats and verify that its customers’ systems were secure.

Using Carbon Black’s analytics and remote management, HiTech quickly uncovered a fileless PowerShell execution and the remote-access program that allowed the breach, applied global policy kills, and scanned thousands of endpoints for indicators of compromise. Carbon Black-enabled threat hunting and remediation let HiTech validate other clients—including D’Arbonne Woods Charter School—were uncompromised in minutes to hours, preventing multi-day shutdowns and materially reducing operational impact.
