Driving the Benefits of Capsule Medical Device Information System

Memorial Healthcare System, a nonprofit leader in South Florida since 1953 with six hospitals including Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Center, needed an enterprise-wide way to capture and use medical device data. After upgrading to an Epic EMR, the system faced a challenge: its prior EMR couldn’t support advanced MDIS features, and Memorial required a scalable solution to integrate a large inventory of device drivers, feed anesthesia data into Epic’s OpTime, collect additional physiological parameters across high- and low-acuity areas, and provide near real‑time mobile spot‑check data.

Memorial implemented Capsule Medical Device Information System™ (MDIS), deploying Capsule Vitals Stream™ on 250+ Capsule Neurons in ICUs and mobile units, integrating anesthesia carts to send parameters to Epic’s OpTime, and running Capsule Chart Xpress™ on 500+ Neurons in med‑surg units. Clinicians report dramatically improved data capture and workflow—often saying they “can’t do their job without it”—and Memorial is now using device data for early warning scoring with plans to expand MDIS integration into additional clinical decision support systems to further improve care.
