A CapsuleTech Case Study
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH), comprising Addenbrooke’s and The Rosie hospitals, set out to create a fully digital care environment where medical device data feeds directly into a single electronic patient record (EPR). The trust needed a scalable, enterprise-wide medical device integration (MDI) approach to capture device streams from ICU, anaesthesia and theatres and parse outbound data for EPR documentation, clinical research and future analytics — a complex requirement that demanded an experienced technology partner.
CUH implemented Capsule’s Medical Device Information System in a phased rollout (starting with ICU and theatres), integrating cardiac monitors, ventilators, anaesthetic devices and CO2 monitors into the EPR and research systems. The integration delivered major efficiencies and safety gains: documentation time savings equivalent to £2.6m annually (124 full‑time nurses), 225 additional anaesthesia/theatre cases per year, a 3‑minute reduction in theatre turnaround time per case, improved data accuracy and patient care, and recognition as a digital leader (HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6 / NHS Global Digital Exemplar).
