York Wastewater Treatment Plant - Customer Case Study

York Wastewater Treatment Plant in Pennsylvania was facing high energy bills of more than US$63,000 per month and costly maintenance on its aging 23-year-old cogeneration system. To modernize its operations, the York City Sewer Authority turned to Capstone Green Energy for a more efficient CHP solution that could reduce lifecycle costs, maintenance, and emissions.

Capstone Green Energy implemented a CR600 Power Package and a C1000 Power Package, using methane from the plant’s anaerobic digesters and natural gas to generate onsite electricity. The system now produces more than 2.5 million kWh annually, cuts energy costs by about US$278,000 per year, reduces CO2 emissions by over 1.5 million pounds annually, and provides additional backup power while reusing exhaust heat to maintain digester temperature and heat the facility.
