A Capstone Green Energy Case Study
Wintershall Holding GmbH, Germany’s largest crude oil and natural gas producer, needed a way to generate reliable electricity at its Großaitingen production station using wet gas directly from on-site oil production. The company worked with Capstone Green Energy and tested a Capstone C65 microturbine to see whether it could operate without gas purification or added infrastructure, especially for future use at remote production sites.
Capstone Green Energy’s C65 microturbine proved successful, running on raw wellhead gas with minimal treatment and producing about 40% of the plant’s electricity needs. After 5,000 test hours, Wintershall deemed the project a success and began installing additional Capstone microturbines at other facilities, with plans to use exhaust heat for building, process, and pipeline heating.
