Oncor Electric Delivery Company - Customer Case Study

Oncor Electric Delivery Company, the utility that operates the largest distribution and transmission system in Texas, wanted to create a resilient, innovative microgrid at its Lancaster, Texas facility to demonstrate clean energy technologies and support future onsite generation needs. To meet this challenge, Oncor worked with Capstone Green Energy and its Texas distributor, Horizon Power Systems, to find a microturbine that could easily parallel with existing and future generation resources.

Capstone Green Energy supplied a propane-fueled 65kW Capstone C65 microturbine for grid connection, which integrated smoothly into Oncor’s microgrid alongside solar, wind, storage, and other generators. The system was commissioned in December 2014 and became part of a 900kW peak-capacity microgrid that can run at peak for two hours before settling to a 550kW baseload, helping Oncor demonstrate peak shaving, load shifting, and low-emissions operation while improving reliability and public education around distributed energy resources.
