A Capstone Green Energy Case Study
New York Industrial R&D Center, a corporate industrial research and development facility in New York State, needed a reliable way to support a major new process that would drive peak power demand to roughly six times its current load within 15 months. With the utility able to cover only about 70% of near-term demand and the project requiring both electricity and 205°F hot water, the center looked for a low-maintenance, modular on-site power solution. Capstone Green Energy’s CHP technology was selected to help meet these growing energy needs.
Capstone Green Energy, working through GEM Energy, installed a 1 MW Capstone C1000S integrated CHP microturbine system that provided continuous electric power and 4.1 million BTUs of hot water per hour. The system was commissioned in January 2018, operates in parallel with the grid, and was designed for phased expansion up to 3,000 kW while allowing 800 kW to remain online during maintenance. The project also received a US$997,500 NYSERDA incentive, helping the customer meet its payback target and improve efficiency as R&D loads increased.
