A Capstone Green Energy Case Study
Masonic Village, a continuing care retirement community and community service organization in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, needed to replace its aging coal-fired steam plant, which had burned more than 5,000 tons of coal annually for heat and laundry services. Seeking a cleaner, more efficient energy source, the organization turned to Capstone Green Energy and its combined heat and power (CHP) microturbine technology.
Capstone Green Energy installed a CHP system that began with five C60 microturbines and was later upgraded to six C65 ICHP microturbines, along with heat recovery modules and remote monitoring. The system now produces 390 kW, supplies 8–10% of campus electricity, and has helped Masonic Village generate 50 million kWh, cut greenhouse gas emissions by 21,000 tons, and achieve about 83% overall efficiency with 47% more net heat recovered.
