A Capstone Green Energy Case Study
Leading Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company, a California-based biotechnology firm, needed a more reliable and cost-effective on-site power solution for a pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion. Rising electricity costs, new carbon tax requirements, and the risk of even brief power interruptions during 30- to 90-day production cycles made uninterrupted critical power essential. Capstone Green Energy’s microgrid and CHP technology was selected to address these needs.
Capstone Green Energy implemented two Capstone C1000 microturbines running on natural gas, paired with a Piller rotating UPS for seamless grid-to-island transitions. The system provided up to 2 MW of power, useful steam for production, and high reliability during a two-week utility outage with no disruption or lost production. The project also cut utility electricity costs from $0.13/kWh to $0.08/kWh, reduced operating costs by nearly 50%, and qualified the facility for $5.4 million in tax credits and incentives.
