A Capstone Green Energy Case Study
Lake Otis Medical Clinic, a 30,000-square-foot healthcare facility in Anchorage, Alaska, was forced to find a new heating and power solution after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake destroyed its boiler and damaged the mechanical/electrical room. Working with Capstone Green Energy partner Arctic Energy, Inc., the clinic selected a Capstone C65 integrated combined heat and power (ICHP) system to replace its failing infrastructure and improve energy resiliency.
Capstone Green Energy installed two C65 microturbines in a CHP/ICHP configuration, eventually upgrading the system to an isolated hydronic loop for better reliability. The new setup now provides all of the building’s thermal and electrical needs, operates in dual-mode with the grid for outage protection, cuts carbon emissions by more than 70%, and reduced utility dependence after years of feeder outages. Despite added project costs, the system still delivered an estimated payback of about seven years.
