Gefu Produktions AG, a milk processing plant in central Switzerland, faced the challenge of what to do with surplus milk sugar left over from whey protein extraction. To turn this waste stream into useful energy, the company turned to Capstone Green Energy and its microturbine technology for a combined heat and power solution.

Capstone Green Energy installed 12 Capstone CR65 MicroTurbines® fueled by biogas from milk sugar fermentation, enabling Gefu Produktions AG to generate onsite electricity and heat. The system uses turbine exhaust for steam and drying processes, helping the plant achieve overall efficiency above 90 percent, produce about 6.5 GWh of electricity annually, and avoid oil use while reducing CO2 emissions.
